Are Cell Phones A Good Safety Device?

Cellphones can be an excellent safety device and they can actually make you look like a potential victim!

Cellphones are good and bad. They are great to call for help if you are in trouble, but they are also bad because most people walk down the street, either talking or texting on their cellphone. When you are busy talking or texting you are usually looking down not paying attention. An attacker looks at this as a sign that you are distracted thus making you an excellent target.

I quite often have people tell me that if my friend hears me being attacked they can call the police to come help me. The person you are on the phone with will not have the police there in the next 30 seconds and I find it highly unlikely the attacker will let you receive self defense advice from your friend while on the phone.

If you must use your cellphone make sure you are stationary and looking up and around being aware of your environment. This way if a potential attacker sees you making eye contact with them they are much more likely to move on and look for another victim.

Also, it is important to keep a simple number like 911 programmed into your phone on speed dial. If you end up in a high stress situation, even a simple number like 911 can be difficult to remember.

Cellphones can be a useful tool and they can also be a great invention for would be attackers!
